Terms of Use
The agreement between you and Quasar when you use the app. Please read the safety section carefully — it matters more than the rest.
Last updated: 10 August 2026 · Version 1.0 (draft)
Working draft. These terms are a starting point, not legal advice, and should be reviewed by a qualified adviser before launch.
01Agreement
These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Stormshadow Ltd (“Quasar”, “we”, “us”), a company registered in New Zealand. By downloading, accessing or using the Quasar app or this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use Quasar.
02Safety — read this
Quasar is a planning and navigation aid — not a substitute for skill, judgement, official charts, or proper preparation.
Map data may be incomplete, out of date or inaccurate. GPS and electronic devices fail, lose signal and run out of battery. Conditions in the backcountry and on the water change quickly. You are responsible for your own safety decisions and for carrying appropriate equipment, official maps and charts, and a means of navigation and communication that does not depend on Quasar.
Quasar is not certified for marine navigation and must not be used as a primary means of marine navigation. Carry official nautical charts and the equipment required by law and good seamanship. Do not rely on Quasar where doing so could put life, safety or property at risk.
Always tell someone your plans, check the forecast and conditions, and be prepared to turn back.
03Your licence
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Quasar for your own lawful outdoor navigation and planning, subject to these terms. Quasar is available for personal and organisation use.
04Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Quasar for any unlawful purpose, or in breach of any third-party rights;
- copy, resell, scrape, or redistribute the app or its map data except as those data licences permit;
- reverse-engineer, tamper with, or attempt to disrupt the app or its servers;
- misuse another person’s account or share content you have no right to share.
05Accounts
Some features require an account, provided through our sign-in provider. You are responsible for keeping your login secure and for activity under your account. Tell us promptly at support@quasar.now if you suspect unauthorised use. We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms.
06Map data & attribution
Quasar displays data from third parties, each under its own licence. You must comply with those licences when you use the data through Quasar.
- Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) — topographic, terrain and related data sourced from the LINZ Data Service is generally made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. Attribution: “Sourced from LINZ. CC BY 4.0.”
- Mapbox — map rendering and tiles are used under Mapbox’s terms of service and are subject to Mapbox and OpenStreetMap attribution requirements where applicable.
07Availability
We do not warrant that Quasar or its map services will be available, uninterrupted or error-free. Map providers may change, degrade or withdraw their data or services, and features that depend on connectivity will not work offline or out of coverage. We may change or discontinue features at any time.
08Intellectual property
Quasar, its name, logo, software, design and original content are owned by Stormshadow Ltd and protected by law. Content you create remains yours; by syncing it you grant us the limited licence needed to store, process and display it to you (and to your workspace, where you choose to share it) in order to provide the app.
09No warranty
To the extent permitted by law, Quasar is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. Where you use Quasar for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 does not apply.
10Limitation of liability
Nothing in these terms limits rights that cannot be excluded by law (including, for consumers in New Zealand, under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993). Subject to that, to the maximum extent permitted by law we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for any loss or harm arising from your reliance on Quasar, its map data, or its availability — including in the backcountry or on the water.
11Changes
We may update these terms as Quasar changes. We will update the “last updated” date and, for material changes, give notice in the app. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
12Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and you submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts. Questions about these terms: support@quasar.now.
