Privacy Policy
How Quasar collects, uses, stores and protects your information. This policy is written around the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
Last updated: 11 August 2026 · Version 1.0
01Who we are
Quasar (“Quasar”, “we”, “us”, “our”) is an outdoor mapping and navigation application for New Zealand, operated by Stormshadow Ltd, 2/5 John Jennings Drive, Oteha, Auckland 0632, New Zealand. We are the agency responsible for the personal information handled through the app under the Privacy Act 2020.
If you have any questions about this policy or your information, contact us at support@quasar.now.
02Scope & the law
This policy applies to the Quasar mobile and web apps and this website. It is written around the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 and its Information Privacy Principles (IPPs). If you use Quasar from outside New Zealand, some additional rights may apply to you — see Overseas users.
This website itself sets no cookies, runs no third-party analytics and loads no third-party fonts or scripts. It only serves the pages you request.
03What we collect & why
a. Content you create
The routes, waypoints, loadouts, notes and other map data you create are the heart of the app. This content is stored on your device, and — when you are signed in — is also synced to and stored on our servers so it is available across your devices and, where relevant, to others in your workspace. We use this content only to provide the app to you. We do not sell it and do not use it for advertising.
b. Account information
Creating an account requires an email address and basic profile details. Authentication is handled by Clerk, our sign-in provider, which processes your email, name (if provided) and authentication identifiers on our behalf. We use this to sign you in, secure your account and associate your content with you.
c. Device location
With your permission, Quasar uses your device’s GPS/location to show your position on the map, orient the view and support navigation. This positioning happens on your device. Location is not continuously transmitted to us for this purpose. Two things to be aware of:
- When the app loads map tiles, terrain or imagery for the area you are viewing, the coordinates of that area and your device’s IP address are necessarily sent to the map providers that serve those tiles (see Map & service providers).
- Quasar does not currently share your live location with our servers or with other users. Shared-workspace and live-tracking features are planned; when they arrive, your position will only be shared while you choose to turn them on, and this policy will be updated first.
You can turn location off at any time in your device settings; some features will be limited without it.
d. Diagnostics & analytics
Quasar does not currently include any third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. We do not track your usage for advertising or profiling.
Planned: we intend to add crash and error diagnostics (Sentry) to improve reliability. When we do, it will collect crash reports and basic technical device information to help us fix problems. This policy will be updated, and the store data disclosures revised, before that is enabled.
e. Support correspondence
If you email us for support, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include. We use it only to respond and to improve the app.
04Data summary
This table is structured so it maps directly onto Apple’s App Privacy “nutrition” labels and Google Play’s Data safety form.
| Data | Why | Stored where | Shared with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account (email, name, auth IDs) | Sign-in & account security | Clerk & our servers | Clerk (processor) |
| Content you create (routes, waypoints, loadouts) | Provide the app | Your device & our servers | Your workspace members, if any. Not sold. |
| Precise location | On-map positioning & navigation | Processed on device | Map providers receive the requested map area + IP. Not shared with us or other users (live tracking is a future feature). |
| Diagnostics / crash | — | Not collected today (Sentry planned) | — |
| Support emails | Respond to you | Our email system | — |
| Payments | Not applicable yet — planned for the future | — | — |
05Map & service providers
To deliver maps and run the service, Quasar relies on the providers below. When the app fetches map tiles, terrain or imagery, the requested map area and your IP address are sent to the relevant map provider — this is a technical necessity of streaming maps, and those providers handle that data under their own privacy terms.
| Provider | Role | Receives |
|---|---|---|
| Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) | Topographic, terrain & aerial map data | Requested map area, IP address |
| Mapbox | Map rendering & tile delivery | Requested map area, IP address, basic technical data |
| Clerk | Authentication / sign-in | Email, name, auth identifiers |
| Railway | Application & database hosting | Your account & synced content (as data host) |
Each provider handles the data it receives under its own privacy policy: LINZ, Mapbox, Clerk and Railway.
06Storage & security
Your content lives on your device and, when synced, in a PostgreSQL database served by our API and hosted on Railway, whose infrastructure may be located outside New Zealand (see Overseas users). Access to our servers is restricted, and data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information as required by the Privacy Act.
07Retention & deletion
We keep your account and synced content for as long as your account is active. You can delete individual items in the app at any time. To delete your account and the content synced to our servers, contact us at support@quasar.now and we will action it. Content stored only on your device is removed when you delete it or uninstall the app. Residual copies in routine encrypted backups are cleared in the normal backup cycle after deletion.
08Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you;
- Request correction of information that is wrong or out of date;
- Ask us to delete your account and associated information.
To exercise any of these, email support@quasar.now. We will respond within the timeframes the Privacy Act requires (generally 20 working days).
09Overseas users
Quasar is built in and for New Zealand, but you may use it elsewhere. Our providers may store or process data outside New Zealand (for example in the United States or the European Union). If you are in a jurisdiction with additional data-protection law — such as the EU/UK GDPR or the Australian Privacy Act — you may have further rights, including data portability and the right to object to certain processing. Contact us to exercise them.
10Children
Quasar is a general-audience outdoor tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
11Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Quasar evolves — for example, when we add crash diagnostics or new features. We will change the “last updated” date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the app. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
